What to Bring to the First Meeting with a Personal Injury Lawyer

If you have been injured in an accident, you may be in pain and feeling overwhelmed about getting yourself back on track. You may also be anxious about your first meeting with a personal injury attorney. How do you prepare for your initial consultation? While every case is different, there are certain documents that you’ll want to bring to your first meeting at The King Firm. This will help your meeting go as smoothly as possible, and ensure your time is productive. Here is a checklist of items that we recommend you bring to your consultation. (Please note, this is just a general list – not all of these documents may be applicable to your case or available to you prior to your first meeting): 

Photos of Your Accident

  • Photos of the accident scene
  • Photos of any injuries
  • Photos of any damage, if vehicles are involved

Medical Information

  • Information for the ambulance service you used
  • Information about the hospital where you were treated
  • List of the dates you were admitted to and released from the hospital 
  • Discharge papers from the hospital
  • List of the doctors who have treated you
  • Documentation of your diagnosis and treatment, or continued treatment plan
  • Any medical bills received
  • Any specialist’s bills (ex: chiropractor, physical therapist)
  • List of current medications
  • Receipts for expenses related to your injury or treatment

Insurance Information

  • Explanation of coverage (health insurance and auto insurance)
  • Insurance card, Medicare/Medicaid card
  • Any correspondence received from your insurer or the other party’s insurer

Documents Related to Lost Work or Income

  • Dates of any missed work
  • Any documentation from your employer about missed days
  • Any documentation from your employer about available sick days or personal days
  • Pay stubs
  • W2 or tax return

Official Reports

  • Copy of the police report
  • Copy of the accident report filed by the business or property owner

Other Information

  • Other party’s insurance information, license plate number, VIN
  • Repair estimate or total loss document
  • List of witness names and their contact information
